In Search of Capsaicin

Some of the most ardent fans of Red Hot Chili Peppers still haven’t reconciled themselves with Frusciante’s departure and claim there’s no point of the group carrying on without the guitarist. But there’s no going back – John chose a solo career in 2009. Since then, the band released two albums – I’m With You (2011) and Getaway (2016) – with the latter splitting the audience and critics. Opponents miss the funk-rock clout and melodies, while those in favour enjoy the rich arrangements. For orthodox fans of Blood Sugar Sex Magik, the musicians offer the punky This Ticonderoga and heavy, funky Detroit, with more toned-down sounds in Go Robot (the quartet reaches for synths, horror of horrors!) and a collaboration with Sir Elton John on Sick Love. Although Frusciante’s replacement Josh Klinghoffer still seems a little overshadowed by the other three, the Chilis’ live performances always deliver quite a burn. If you went to last year’s Open’er, you’ve seen for yourselves the gusto with which the group’s youngest member performs their greatest hits. His day will come – he’s bound to be on fire on 25 July at the Cracovia Stadium. (Artur Jackowski, "Karnet" magazine)
