Netia Off Camera 2017
Friday, April 28, 2017 - Sunday, May 7, 2017
Netia Off Camera, organised by the Association of Independent Art And Other Things Off Camera and Krakow Festival Office since 2008, is a major event devoted to Polish and international independent cinema.
Against the Current
The festival presents bold, independent cinema unafraid to go against the current. Let it sweep us away for the tenth time!
What fascinates and worries filmmakers? What are the hottest titles around the globe right now? We seek answers to these questions during the 10th Netia Off Camera International Festival of Independent Cinema (28 April – 7 May). One of the key aims of the festival is to support young, talented directors. This year’s rivalry for the Krakow Film Award in the Making Way competition brings together ten films, most of which are directorial debuts.
New this year is the section Until the Grave showcasing artists’ longing for romantic tales which surprise us with their innovative take on the subject. We will learn the story of a young Pakistani woman living in Brussels; following tradition, the girl must pick her husband, with help coming from Skype (Noces, dir. Stephan Streker).
The section The Future Arrives Today presents idyllic utopias and dismal dystopias. Drake Doremus’ Equals starring Kristen Stewart and Nicholas Hoult paints a troubling picture of a dystopian future.
Does anyone have any doubt that “film is a woman”? Films screened as part of the Powerful Sex section tell stories of uncompromising and bold women. We will see the documentary Maya Angelou and Still I Rise (dir. Rita Coburn Whack, Bob Hercules) dedicated to the icon of African-American literature.
For fans of the music side of the festival, we have electrifying news: the star of Off Stage will be the young singer Dillon whose distinctive voice has earned her fans around the globe. We will also be Catching Up and making Discoveries, and learn the winner of the Polish Film Competition – emotions guaranteed! More about the festival in the May issue of “Karnet”.
