Fan Dances

In ancient Japan, fans were attributes of geishas, dancers and warriors. People used them to cool themselves down, stoke fires or chase away insects – and they remain a powerful form of expression in dance until the present day. Fans are the leading motif of the 18th “Cracovia Danza” Court Dance Festival (30 July – 6 August).

This year’s event’s motto In the Far East is a nod to Asia. Once again, Kraków is visited by dancers from all over the globe, taking part in outdoor spectacles, demonstrations and workshops of dances from all eras and corners of the world. First-time visitors include the Korean dancers of the Chum-Sarang Arts Academy, accompanied by the Jeolla Samhyenyukak music ensemble. During the performance Dances of a Thousand and One Nights, held on 5 August at the Main Market Square, Jang Tae Yun and her pupils present courtly dances of ancient Korea. The same day, Cracovians and tourists are invited to the great public ball. On 6 August, we will see the spectacle Dancing Fans with the participation of the “Cracovia Danza” Court Ballet and invited artists.

Throughout the weekend, dance brings the city’s sites to life: we go on a Journey With Dance at the Barbican, visit the Bishop Erazm Ciołek Palace to discover entertainment of centuries gone by with At Courts and Palaces, and the Collegium Maius shows us that it’s not far From Learning to Dance. Past eras are conjured up through music, costumes and – first and foremost – virtuosos of courtly dances Barbara Segal, Marie-Claire Bär Le Corre and Gloria Giordano. A huge attraction will be the display of flag juggling by sbandieratori from Ferrara. A true fiesta di danza awaits! (Justyna Skalska, “Karnet” magazine)
