Bach Days
Saturday, March 10, 2018, 6:00 PM - Sunday, March 18, 2018
In 1717, Johann Sebastian Bach was appointed as Kapellmeister to Leopold, Prince of Anhalt-Köthen, becoming one of the most handsomely paid members of the court. During his six years with the generous patron, Bach composed a cycle of harpsichord suites, sonatas and partitas for solo violin, the first volume of Das Wohltemperierte Klavier and his acclaimed Brandenburg Concertos. The Academy of Music in Kraków’s Bach Days (11-17 March), held under the banner “Bach in Köthen – Bach the Violinist – Bach the Harpsichordist” focuses on this period in the life and the secular instrumental compositions of the Baroque master. Florianka Recital Hall resounds with French and English suites (Ewa Mrowca, Andrzej Zawisza and Bernhard Klapprott on harpsichord), sonatas by Johann Sebastian and Carl Philip Emanuel Bach (Agnieszka Świątkowska on violin), and contemporary works inspired by the Baroque (Jerzy Żak on lute, theorbo and guitar). Bach Days are opened and closed by the Baroque Orchestra of the Academy of Music, performing a selection of Brandenburg Concertos. They will be joined by the acclaimed violinists Robert Bachara (inauguration) and Antoinette Lohmann (grand finale). (Barbara Skowrońska)
