With a Spring in Your Step

Some people look back at the past year with nostalgia, while others always head into the new year with optimism. But it doesn’t matter which of these describes you better – this evening is all about having a great time!

Although it might be hard to believe, the “out with the old, in with the new” tradition of celebrating the new year only dates back to the late 19th century. In Spain, the event is marked by eating grapes, in Denmark by smashing plates and jumping from chairs, in Italy by improvisation… And we have our very own way of making this night special: cheering on the coming year and having fun in the city space! This year, New Year’s Eve in Kraków abounds in events: parties of all scales, in the centre and beyond, all held under a single cultural banner.

At the Main Market Square, we say goodbye to 2019 accompanied by the Cracovian hip-hop act Jan-rapowanie and leading artists of the Polish stage, including Ralph Kaminski, Paulina Przybysz, Andrzej Dąbrowski, Krystyna Prońko and Ten Typ Mes who present the canon of Polish hip-hop in jazz arrangements as part of the Albo inaczej project. On the stroke of midnight, we look up to the sky for a laser display and the first moments of the New Year are accompanied by the duo The Dumplings.

The great party in the marquee at Róż Avenue in Nowa Huta is the culmination of the year-round celebrations of the district’s 70th birthday. DJ and journalist Hirek Wrona takes us on a musical journey across the last five decades, from favourite oldies to the latest hits, all to dazzling visualisations and animations depicting Nowa Huta over the years. Midnight is marked by state-of-the-art special effects.

Famous for their love of outdoor performances, KTO Theatre brings a ballroom to the Podgórze Market Square. We step into 2020 with a spring in our step to the rhythm of great hits and dances from all over the globe. The evening also features parlour games recalling some of the finest traditions of Viennese salons.

And that’s just the start of the fun… A whole new year filled with culture awaits! (Bartosz Suchecki, ƒ“Karnet”)
