41st International Sea Song Festival Shanties 2022
Thursday, February 24, 2022 - Sunday, February 27, 2022
Heave and Pull!
Jerzy Porębski was wont to launch each edition of the Shanties festival by saying “Another year has sailed by.” Even though the audience favourite departed to Fiddler’s Green last August, his spirit will continue inspiring the 41st International Sea Song Festival (24-27 February).
It’s been rather longer than the traditional 12 months since fans of mariners’ songs have been able to gather in person. Last year the festival found harbour online, bringing together performers from Poland and abroad. This year musicians and the audience return to favourite Cracovian haunts. Resounding with ballads, the inaugural concert is held at the S5 Studio at Radio Kraków, and Kijów Cinema serves as the main port for guests from all over the globe. Festival guests recall Jerzy Porębski and Mira Urbaniak, while the Klang and Zejman & Garkumpel ensembles introduce the latest generation to shanties and sea songs. Classic shanties resound in Kijów Cinema’s concert hall and in the Main Market Square with the “Zawisza Czarny” choir. During the finale concert, the Perły i Łotry group celebrates their 30th anniversary accompanied by celebrated guests. (Bartosz Suchecki, “Karnet”)
