The tale of the history of the Polish Underground State under the Nazi German occupation is superimposed here upon the history of the First World War that is set into the walls of the building.
The institution devoted to the Polish clandestine army from the Second World War has its headquarters in former Austrian barracks and magazines. During the First World War its spacious reinforced underground shelter served the high command of the Fortress of Kraków, the largest created in the Austro-Hungarian Empire and developed since the mid-19th century. Superimposed upon this earlier history is the tale of the Polish Underground State during the Second World War, presented here in the broader context of Polish traditions of independence. The museum also organises temporary exhibitions, lectures, workshops, meetings with witnesses of history, and film screenings.
