Catch Pegasus in Kraków

10 October 2017

You can always explore a city with a map and a guidebook in hand. But the real fun begins when you wander around in the company of a local, who will show you sights you would never discover yourself.

Catch Pegasus in Kraków is an app which invites you on a literary journey. Six artists will serve as your guide for places they consider important and inspiring. Their original choices are very individual, and sometimes surprising. The other two routes: The Radio KrakówListeners’ Trail and A Sentimental Walk were designed according to the results of a poll of people who know and love Kraków. You can follow one trail or go off the beaten track, especially when the trails cross. Most places can be reached on foot. In a few cases you will need to use public transport or a bicycle.

Wit Szostak The Artists Trail
Born in Kraków, he has also studied, lived, worked, and got married here. He has published ten books of prose and several stand-alone stories. His novels have been nominated for the Nike Literary Award and the Polityka Passport Award. Dumanowski has been adapted for the radio and also twice for the stage (at the National Stary Theatre in Kraków). The novels ChochołyDumanowski, and Fuga form a cycle in which the author confronts his home city. For Kraków haunts, troubles, entices, and repels him. Szostak claims he wouldn’t be able to live anywhere else, although he doesn’t exactly know why.

Jerzy Franczak Captivating Nowa Huta
Born in Nowa Huta in 1978, he moved to Old Podgórze on reaching adulthood. He has worked on the radio and television, and also as a journalist, and has penned novels and a few collections of short stories. A lecturer at the Jagiellonian University for many years now, he discusses contemporary literature with his students and teaches creative writing. Recently, he has taken up writing role-playing games.

Adam Miklasz Captivating Nowa Huta
He loves his local neighbourhood of Nowa Huta and likewise adores Cieszyn, Budapest, housing estates, sports betting, strong alcohol, and female bass guitarists. He has published three novels, and co-created scripts for theatre performances, including a few about Nowa Huta: NH Wonderland and Tales from a Thousand and One Blocks. He is interested in history, culture, and music: especially that of Central and Eastern Europe as well as the Balkans. He likes watching poor quality football matches in the lower leagues and travelling south.

Silvia Bruni A Meeting of Cultures
Born and raised in Rome, at the age of twelve she fell in love with Chopin’s music and decided to learn Polish. She had no idea at the time that she would end up meeting a wonderful Polish pianist who would become her husband and bring her to Kraków, which she has made her home for the last ten years. She is an academic and has recently defended her doctoral thesis on the reception of Chopin and his work in Italy. She is the author of the firstever Italian monograph on Bolesław Leśmian. She also translates poetry and organises concerts and literary meetings.

Listeners of Radio Kraków
According to research, they are usually aged over 35 with a stable professional and family background. Well educated, they live mainly in Kraków and the surrounding region. They are opinionated, appreciate widely accepted values, and are drawn to things of quality, not as an expression of status but out of good taste. They expect reliable information and entertainment of the highest standard. They actively participate in culture: they read, and go to the theatre, cinema and opera.

A Sentimental Walk has been designed by people who have lived in Kraków for many years and in these volatiletimes continue to value places which have remained unchanged against all odds and deliver what they promise. It’s simply enough to mention their names for those in the know to get immediately the reference and begin to relate impassioned tales – either their own or those of their friends.
