Brisk February

31 January 2019

This year’s calendar falls such that Carnival runs throughout February, culminating with Fat Thursday on the last day of the month. And while sometimes we try to resist temptation (although who can really say no to Cracovian doughnuts?), there’s plenty of reasons to devour big doses of energy to satisfy our hunger for culture. So let’s wolf down the spectacles and recitals of the Opera Rara Festival, which recalls the musical canon of the Baroque and takes us on a journey through centuries of European culture. The programme also includes meetings with the artists, while the cycle “Opera Rara with Taste” makes a welcome return. How delicious!

Another electrifying event this month is the Materia Prima festival, all the more exciting because it’s only held every other year. The performances focusing on the finest imagery and exploring fascinating forms are as popular as ever, and the theatre artists visiting Kraków keep their eye firmly on universal themes. There are also many unmissable exhibitions, from Henry Moore at the National Museum to experimental art at Bunkier Sztuki and a showcase of photography at the Nowa Huta Cultural Centre. And if summer still feels too far away and you long to hear the sound of the ocean waves, head to the Shanties festival to drink up your fill of grog-soaked sea songs.

After all, it’s Carnival time!
