This legendary place, literally called “The Beautiful Dog”, initially opened on św. Jana St., later on Sławkowska Street, finally to be transferred to Bożego Ciała Street in Kazimierz. The club has always been eagerly visited by artists and is, to quote Piotr Czerski from his novel Ojciec odchodzi (Father’s Departure), “the most important place for all Bohemians, Bohemianists, quasi-Bohemians, wannabe-Bohemians, and even anti-Bohemians”. Piękny Pies makes frequent appearances in the latest Polish literature, including the novels of Marcin Świetlicki and Łukasz Orbitowski. It is the stage for a great deal of concerts and dance events. The club produced an oral newsletter (actually a literary cabaret of the Hyde Park type) under the name of Gadający Pies (i.e. “The Talking Dog”), which recurs at intervals. The editors included Marcin Świetlicki and Edward Pasewicz, and in it the luminaries of Kraków culture and academia enthusiastically shared their works and comments.
