Crypt of Honour under the Church on the Rock
ul. Skałeczna 15
The Crypt of Honour under the Church “on the Rock” is the last resting place of Poles of particular merit to culture, science, and the arts.
Partially hewn from the living rock, the single-nave crypt under the church “on the Rock” was finished late in the 18th century, yet it was only the approaching 400th anniversary of the death of chronicler Jan Długosz in 1880 that provided an impulse to refurbish the crypt and use it as the burial place for great Poles of particular merit to culture, science, and the arts.
Besides the mortal remains of Jan Długosz, the great chronicler of Polish history, the teacher of King’s sons, and a canon of Kraków, also buried in the church “na Skałce” are man of letters and translator Lucjan Siemieński (1877), poet Adam Asnyk (1897), painter Henryk Siemiradzki (1902), playwright and painter Stanisław Wyspiański (1907), painter Jacek Malczewski (1929), composer Karol Szymanowski (1937), and the only Nobel Prize winner among them – Czesław Miłosz (2004).
