From the stage version of the one-act play L'inganno felice, which the 19-year-old Gioacchino Rossini wrote for the Teatro San Moisè in Venice, to the Little Solemn Mass, the last great masterpiece and musical testament of the composer, who was already more than 70 years old at the time – this year’s edition of the Royal Opera Festival centred around the music of the Italian genius of the bel canto style will be stretched between these works. The repertoire also included a Roman version of Othello (instead of a murder, it ends in a reconciliation between the jealous protagonist and Desdemona) and Cinderella, in which the shoe was replaced with a bracelet (to avoid the scathing reaction of 19th-century audiences to the lifting of the dress during the fitting of the shoe). A local accent will be a concert version of the opera Pierre de Médicis by Józef Michał Poniatowski – a diplomat, singer and composer related to the last Polish king who wrote in Rossini’s style. We will applaud the June events of the Royal Opera Festival will be applauded at the European Music Centre in Lusławice and the Music School Complex in Tarnów, and in July we will move to Kraków – to the stages of the Opera and Philharmonic, whose artistic teams prepare all festival performances.
