Starting in the mid-19th century, the Austro-Hungarian authorities decided to surround Kraków with layers of fortifications - forts, entrenchments, citadels, cannon batteries... This is how the Kraków Fortress became a thing. Although its glory years passed with the end of World War I and the establishment of a new European order, it is still part of the urban landscape today thanks to the buildings and their remains as well as the urban layout which reflects the shape of the original fortress sites. Many of the fortress buildings have been restored in recent years, and some of them also serve new functions as museums cultural venues and educational institutions. The attempt to promote this part of Kraków's heritage, known mainly by history enthusiasts, has been the goal for the organisers of Kraków Fortress Days for several years. The intergenerational event enables visitors to become acquainted with the masterpieces of old military technology, while showcasing the great potential of this part of Kraków's heritage as a tourist attraction or simply as a great option for a trip without leaving the city. The list of more than twenty venues of this year’s edition include Fort 2 Kościuszko, Fort 52 Borek, Fort 52a Jugowice, Bastion III Kleparz and the artillery Fort 44 Tonie, which has not yet been made available to visitors. The programme of the event features themed walks (including a night tour), educational workshops and activities, recreational and sporting activities and even a boat cruise.
