Playing with Kantor: Romania – Spectres of the Past
Tuesday, October 14, 2025, 4:00 PM - Saturday, October 25, 2025
The connections and mutual influences between Tadeusz Kantor’s work and the Romanian culture – not limited to the theatre of the absurd – are surprisingly rich.
The programme of the festival includes performances, a scientific session, meetings, exhibitions, a concert and workshops. We will see Friedrich Schiller’s Maria Stuart showcased by the National Theatre of Bucharest (October 15, the performance will be presented in the Kielce Cultural Centre, the organisers provide transport to Kielce). The internationally acclaimed director of this production, Andrei Şerban, makes no secret of his fascination with Kantor, whom he had the opportunity to meet in person. Songs That Scare Away Fear, directed by Ada Milea, is a theatrical concert inspired by the work of Romanian Nobel Prize winner Herta Müller (October 16, Cricoteka), whom we will meet the next day in the International Cultural Centre (MCK). The programme also includes an international academic session The Multiplied Spectres of Kantor. Influences, Methods, Interpretations, the performance Crystal Consciousness by Andrea Gavriliu, prepared specially for Playing with Kantor, and an exhibition dedicated to a famous Romanian director: Silviu Purcărete – Milestones of the Romanian Theatre.
