What do we see when images are arranged in new, unexpected configurations and detached from their original functions and creators? What happens to their meaning when they are placed in new contexts? Andrij Bojarov’s exhibition “Preanalogue Postdigital. Wystawa indywidualna / Isikunäitus*” raises questions about the role of photography as a medium undergoing continuous transformation.

The exhibition of almost 100 works is composed of both individual photographs and elaborate sets of images. Arranged into unconventional, often surprising compositions, they create new contexts and meanings. Bojarov uses pieces by various artists – both well-known and anonymous – film still frames, reproductions, archival materials and photocopies compiled from a variety of sources. By transforming them, he demonstrates that the meaning of an image is not fixed but depends on the context in which it is placed.

Andrij Bojarov – a visual artist, independent curator and researcher of contemporary art – consistently reflects in his work on the status of the image in contemporary culture. He describes his works as “secondary reflections” and “copies of copies”. They do not depict the reality directly, but rather its traces: fragments, remnants, memories and visual impressions. They often elude unambiguous interpretation. Their strength lies in their ambiguity: rather than offering ready answers, they trigger associations and stir imagination. As the exhibition’s curator, Marek Janczyk, emphasises: “These works, whose meanings are not immediately obvious (…) can and should serve as catalysts for reflection, emotion and imagination.”

“Preanalogue Postdigital” does not offer a single, self-contained narrative, but rather opens up room for questions about the nature of the photographic image and its place in contemporary art. This is an exhibition for anyone who wishes to view photography differently: not as a record of reality but as a starting point for questions about memory, perception and the way we perceive the world today.

* In this case the Estonian word “isikunäitus” in the title “Preanalogue Postdigital. Wystawa indywidualna / Isikunäitus” does not refer to the type of the exhibition but forms an integral part of its name. Literally translated, it means “individual” or “personal exhibition” and is, therefore, closely linked to the artist’s distinctive perspective. Bojarov uses this term in a way that subverts its traditional usage, not to denote the solo format of the exhibition but to emphasise its personal character.
