A landscape park in Podgórze (approx. 8 ha/20 acres) was set up at the foot of a limestone hill, in the place of a stone quarry that had operated here since the Middle Ages. Its initiator was Wojciech Bednarski, the director of the local school and a social activist. The park opened in 1896, and its carefully designed composition was dominated by the lay of the land, to which the selection of trees, shrubs, and greenery that grows in the shade of rock walls were subordinated.
