Literary walk: Wawel-Kazimierz-Podgórze
A literary walk from Wawel to Kazimierz and Podgórze covers places of memory, literary clubs and cafés, and modern projects promoting literature in the public arena. The Crypt of Poet-Prophets in Wawel Cathedral is the burial place of the most eminent Polish poets of the 19th century. Having visited this necropolis, we suggest that you descend down to the Vistula River (in summer walking down through the Dragon’s Den) to see the monument to the faithful dog that became a hero of local folklore and a number of books, and visit another place where eminent artists (including Nobel Prize winner Czesław Miłosz) are buried: the Crypt of the Artists in the Church “on the Rock”. While visiting Kazimierz, it’s downright unheard of to miss the pubs and cafés where literary life blossoms. On the other side of the Vistula, in Podgórze, it’s worthwhile visiting Cricoteka, a centre devoted to the avant-garde art of Tadeusz Kantor, and taking a look at the murals inspired by the books of Stanisław Lem and other writers. We suggest finishing the tour at MOCAK to round off the events of the day and to seek further inspiration in the quiet atmosphere of the museum library.
