A walk across the courtyards and the terraced gardens of Wawel leads to a former firing tower, which commands an expansive view of Kraków and its vicinity.

For centuries Wawel Hill, with the Royal Castle and Cathedral towering above it, held not only stately and religious but also defensive functions. The edifices were developed over nearly ten centuries of history, and were repeatedly remodelled, rebuilt, and extended. The walk begins at the Lost Wawel exhibition, by a model of the hill in its 18th-century incarnation, and leads through a succession of courtyards to the terraced royal gardens. From the lower terrace, we take a flight of narrow steps by the residential towers: the Gothic Hen’s Foot, and the baroque Tower of King Sigismund (Zygmunt) III Vasa, to the slope before the northern face of the castle. A perfect place to admire the beautiful panorama of the Old City. An extended walk leads to Sandomierska Tower, whose top commands a magnificent view of Kraków and the vicinity.
