Timeless
The first track played on RMF FM when it launched in 1990 was Toto’s Africa. And it’s hardly a surprise; their complex, expansive songs overflow with rock energy and make you want to sing along. But the group’s style reaches beyond traditional rock, featuring elements of pop, soul, funk, blues, R&B and even jazz. Toto’s strength is not just their music, but also the excellent lineup: the group’s four members are all great singers. The official frontman and vocalist is Joseph Williams (son of John Williams, the acclaimed composer of music to Star Wars), but guitarist Steve Lukather and keyboardists Steve Pocaro and David Paich are equally adept singers.
They’ve been playing for over forty years, and they’ve sold forty million albums, received six Grammies and released megahits including Hold the Line, Rosanna and Stop Loving You. And although they are rich and famous, they never forget about those less fortunate by supporting war veterans and activities of the UN. They also haven’t been strangers to heartbreak themselves: one of Porcaro’s brother passed away and another suffers from a serious illness.
The group is celebrating its anniversary by releasing the album 40 Trips Around the Sun, featuring remastered hits and three brand new tracks. We’ll hear their timeless music at Tauron Arena Kraków on 28 February. (Artur Jackowski, "Karnet" magazine)
