Sękowa, Church of St Philip and St James the Apostles
Sękowa 13, Sękowa
The Church of St Philip and St James the Apostles in Sękowa is covered with a tall shingle roof that flows down like a cloak, nearly touching the ground with its hem. The wooden form huddled among trees and shrubs was enthusiastically painted by the artists of Young Poland: Stanisław Wyspiański, Józef Mehoffer, and Włodzimierz Tetmajer. The wooden church dating from around 1520 was severely damaged in the First World War. Reconstruction continued to the end of the 20th century, yet the wait was worth it. Inscription on the UNESCO World Heritage List in 2003 was justified by the exceptional aesthetic, architectural, and scenic values of the church in Sękowa. For the place is truly beautiful!
The church is part of the Małopolska Wooden Architecture Route.
