The Kraków Philharmonic summer concerts at the Bishop Erazm Ciołek Palace present unusual lineups of chamber musicians and composers rarely performed during regular concerts. The cycle opens on 5 July with classical elegance during an evening of arias and duets from Mozart’s operas (if là ci darem la mano, everything will be tranquillo e placido!). On 12 July, the Musica Graziosa trio takes us on a fantastic journey with the concert Music in the Mirror of Time, resounding with works by composers such as Jacques Ibert, Bohuslav Martinů and Johann Joachim Quantz. On 19 July, Agnieszka Kaczmarek-Bialic (harp) and Mariusz Pędziałek (oboe) perform music by French, Italian and Spanish composers and Witold Lutosławski, while on 26 July we will hear sonatas for double bass and basso continuo with Włodzimierz Gazdeczka on double bass and Paulina Tkaczyk on harpsichord. On 2 August, we will hear a bassoon quartet presenting psychedelic dance numbers, including the stunning March to the Scaffold from Berlioz’s Symphonie fantastique. On 9 August, we will immerse ourselves in music for wind instruments with the Kraków Philharmonic Reed Trio presenting a programme featuring Mozart’s Divertimento in B major KV 229 and contemporary compositions. 16 August flies the stars and stripes banner: we will hear works by Gershwin and Bernstein arranged for a string quartet, as well as Dvořák’s “American” String Quartet in F major. 23 August also features string instruments and early music compositions: a viol ensemble presents works dating from between the 16th and 18th centuries, mainly penned by English composers. The final concert of the cycle (30 August) centres around piano music, once again with string accompaniment. The artists appear as a piano quartet and quintet with works by Mozart, Noskowski and Nowakowski.

The Bishop Erazm Ciołek Palace

ul. Kanonicza 17

The fascinating sculpture of Madonna from Krużlowa from the early 15th century is but one of the fine examples of art of bygone Poland that can be admired in the beautiful mansion (often referred to as a palace) at the foot of the Hill.

Situated in the vicinity of Wawel Castle, the Gothic-Renaissance mansion was built early in the 16th century from the funds of a diplomat and patron of arts, Bishop Erazm Ciołek. It boasts two permanent exhibitions presenting the art of bygone Poland from the 12th to the 18th centuries, and also the art of the Orthodox Church from the territory of the bygone Commonwealth of Poland–Lithuania. One of the most important exhibits is Christ in the Garden of Gethsemane, a depiction hewn from stone by Wit Stwosz (Veit Stoss), the artist of the magnificent high altar at St Mary’s Church, transferred from the cemetery that once surrounded the church. One of the most captivating pieces of this exhibition, which brings together a great deal of works of sacred art from the churches, monasteries, and convents in Małopolska, is the sculpture of Our Lady with Infant Jesus from Krużlowa. dating back to the early 15th century. One room is devoted to ancient Polish funerary customs and traditions: unique portraits fixed to coffins, a griffin-shaped catafalque, mourning banners, and liturgical vestments are a fascinating testimony to Sarmatian rituals and customs. In turn, the collection of icons presented in the museum is one of the most ancient and precious collections of Orthodox paintings in Central and Eastern Europe. The warehouse in the vaults is where copies of precious architectural sculptures from all over Poland, notably Wawel Cathedral and Kraków’s Church of St Mary’s, are stored.
