The leading motif of the 23rd Silent Film Festival is “Changes”. The programme features classics of the genre, including David Wark Griffith’s Broken Blossoms telling the story of a kind-hearted Chinese man who falls in love with an unhappy English girl, and The Great Dictator – Charlie Chaplin’s first sound film (stylistically following the traditions of silent cinema), providing a scathing critique of Adolf Hitler. We will also see Maya Deren’s experimental productions and films from the earliest days of the sound revolution, including Alfred Hitchcock’s Blackmail (made in silent and sound versions) and Ryszard Ordyński’s Janko the Musician – one of Poland’s first sound films from 1930. There will of course be live music accompanying the screenings, with performers including Adrian Konarski, Stefan Wesołowski and his trio and the TANŌK duo. All events are organised by Kino Pod Baranami and the Dla Kina Foundation.
